Fresh out of the oven. In one warm bite, gooey chocolate and crisp golden, buttery cookie.

“Mm!”

“Is good?” Lex pulled his boy into his lap.

“S’good!”

In a matter of moments, chocolate would be all over Conner’s face. Lex could only smile helplessly. His son undid him every time.

They both turned their heads as Superman appeared in their kitchen. Angry words were on his lips, but didn’t make it out. Superman remained arrested by the sight in front of him.

“Evening, Superman,” Lex said, a tone of warning lacing through his voice.

“Eebing, Supamayun!” Conner echoed.

Superman looked between the two of them. It was surprising to see Lex’s son with him. Not that Superman was unaware that Lex Luthor had a son, but rather, Lex kept the boy out of the media spotlight, and Superman didn’t think of him as a father often. Didn’t picture him in a soft sweater, jeans, and socks. Didn’t imagine him making magical moments with that rosy-cheeked cherub.

“Look, um...”

“Is this important?” Lex held Conner’s glass of milk up to his mouth so he could drink.

“No. It can wait. Um, do you know Allistair Audsley? By any chance?”

“Hm. I think he used to work for Luthorcorp, under my father. I was twelve then, though. Hand me my cellphone. I’ll have Mercy pull up our old files for you. I trust I don’t want Conner overhearing whatever this guy has done.”

Superman looked down at the cookie-smudged little face. “No.”

After Lex had spoken to Mercy and set the phone down, the timer rang. Lex picked Conner up as he stood and handed him to Superman.

“Hold him for a minute, would you?”

Superman looked at Conner, who just grinned, while Lex took the next batch out of the oven. Superman shifted the boy a little, careful to be gentle. Conner had black hair framing his face in silky curls and his father’s beautiful blue gray eyes. Not for the first time, he wondered where the boy had come from, but the little tug in his chest upon looking at Lex’s boy was brand new.

“Okay. Crisis averted.” Lex came over to reclaim Conner. “I hope I didn’t delay justice too much.”

Reluctantly, Superman handed Conner over to Lex. “No...”

“Cookie!” Conner exclaimed.

“You want another one?” Lex smiled at him.

Conner pointed at Superman. “Cookie?”

“Ah. He wants to know if you’d like a cookie.”

“Oh.” Superman looked down, then crouched down a bit to look at Conner. “I gotta go work right now, but I’ll take a raincheck on that, buddy. Thank you for asking.”

Lex kissed the back of Conner’s head, and Superman suddenly felt like an intruder in their home.

“Okay, I need to get going.” Superman straightened up and gave Lex a nod. He headed for the balcony, still disoriented by seeing this man, who he had built up in his mind as hard and nearly invincible, so soft and open.

He shook his head and took off, wishing he could come back later to kiss that boy goodnight and sit back with Lex and enjoy a home-baked cookie.
